GES Weekly Newsletter

GES Families,
As we head into the final month of the school year, please make note about our last day of school. Our last day of school, May 30, is only a half day for students. We will dismiss at 12:00 directly after the 3rd grade clap out. Therefore, we will not have afternoon kindergarten; the last day for these kiddos will be May 29. Also, there will be no lunches served on May 30. AM Kindergarten bus students will ride home with the rest of the students and not separately as they are accustomed to doing.

Have a great weekend!
Mr. Morris

TRIPLE P: BUILDING TEENAGERS' SURVIVAL SKILLS: MAY 16
Building Teenagers’ Survival Skills is a Triple P discussion group program that will help you deal with the day-to-day challenges of parenting teens. Frequently, parents become concerned about the safety of their teens as they begin to spend increasing time away from home, often with new friends. Often parents strive to keep their teens safe by restricting their freedom. This can lead to conflict between parents and teens.
This program will introduce you to some positive parenting strategies to help you reduce the risks that your teen may face when away from your supervision. You will learn some of the reasons why teens can get into trouble, as well as suggestions for helping you teach your teen how to manage problem situations. Click here for more information.

3RD GRADE CLAP OUT
This year's clap out will take place on May 30 at 11:10. Students will travel through the building and then exit onto the playground through the recess doors. We will have students from K-2 lined up in the halls and are asking parents to line the sidewalk and the blacktop of the playground. Families with younger siblings are encouraged to pick their students up from the office prior to the clap out.

SCHEDULING FOR NEXT YEAR
Many factors are taken into consideration when placing students in classrooms K-3. One of these factors is input from the parents who know their children best. For parents of students entering K-3 in the fall, click here to access a survey to assist us in scheduling your child's classroom for next year. Forms are due by May 28.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
TRATEGY OF THE MONTH
This month we will focus on kindness. Students will discuss ways to show kindness toward others and times when someone was kind to them. Showing kindness can lead to healthier levels of self-esteem, happiness, and overall well-being. Click here for more info.

CLASSROOM LESSONS IN APRIL
Kindergarten: Our kindergarten classes will have a lesson to prepare them to become first graders. The lesson will focus on responsibility, respect, and being a PAX leader. They will also listen to a story as a part of this lesson.
First, Second, and Third Grade: I will be collaborating with teachers in each grade to pick a topic for their class.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Thatcher

WELL NOTE
Play is crucial to any child’s development at any age. Through play, students are able to build competencies and capacities to cope. They are able to identify personal strengths and weaknesses. Regardless of age, encourage your student in unstructured play.

SCHOOL LUNCHES
For the 2023-2024 school year, lunches at school will cost $3.00. This includes entrée, fruit, vegetable, and milk/ water. REPORTING ABSENCES
All absences need to be reported to the GES office as soon as possible. Absences should be reported in SafeArrival. You are asked to report your child’s absence using any of these three convenient methods:
  1. Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.com). The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.
  2. Use the SafeArrival website, https://go.schoolmessenger.com. The first time you use the website, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.
  3. Call the toll-free number (866) 294-5982 to report an absence using the automated phone system.
These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future absences can be reported at any time.

ALTERNATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Under state attendance laws, vacations are considered unexcused absences unless specifically stated in District policy. Vacations are now referred to as Alternative Learning Experiences, or ALE, as the District values and recognizes the learning that can take place with travel. Click here to apply for an ALE.
