GMS Student Wins Recipe Contest & Will Meet First Lady at White House

Granville Middle School student Sydney Mazik will never forget her 13th birthday. After winning a national recipe contest, the eighth-grader will spend July 10 at the White House having lunch with First Lady Michelle Obama!

Sydney entered the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge in April and her recipe for S.S. Asparagus Pie – S.S. stands for spaghetti squash – was selected to represent Ohio at the Kids’ “State Dinner,” a special lunch at the White House.

The contest required an original recipe created by a kid 8-12 years old that follows the MyPlate nutritional guidelines, with fruits and vegetables making up half of the dish. The recipe also included whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy.

The judges said, “Your recipe was particularly impressive and had all of the right ingredients. It was creative, tasted great and, most importantly, was healthy, which is why it is a winner.”

Before the White House luncheon, 55 young chefs from across the country and U.S. territories will enjoy a special tour of the Smithsonian and dinner at the Westin Georgetown on July 9.

Sydney and her mother, Susan, will already be in Washington, D.C., July 5-9 for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Conference. Sydney is an active member of FCCLA and is representing GMS at the conference.

“Sydney is an excellent young nutrition educator, who engages audience in her presentations and practices sound nutritional principles in her everyday life,” said Barbara Blatter, GMS Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher & FCCLA Adviser.

This year, Sydney’s FCCLA projects included educating community members and children about the importance of vegetables through food tastings, teaching a third grade class about the importance of eating a nutritious breakfast, and explaining to 1,200 middle and high school students the success of the GMS FCCLA Fuel Up to Play 60 Breakfast Grant she helped write and conduct.
